Matrix New World Engineering Leader Continues to Pursue Passion for Sustainable Future Advising University

Dr. Laurie LaPat-Polasko serves second year on ASU Environmental Engineering External Advisory Board.

Tempe, AZ – Dr. Laurie LaPat-Polasko, Vice President and National Director of Remediation, Matrix New World Engineering (Matrix), was recently appointed to serve a second year on the External Advisory Board  for the development of the Environmental Engineering (EVE) Program at Arizona State University.

"I am proud to support ASU in an advisory position once again,"" said LaPat-Polasko."ASU’s leadership relative to the research and development of today’s major environmental issues is crucial to developing the solutions for our future workforce, renewable energy sources, infrastructure resiliency in the face of climate change, and the moral and ethical impacts of technological change."

Known throughout the U.S. and worldwide for her work developing innovative solutions to address water and soil contamination issues, Dr. LaPat-Polasko has a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Maryland, a M.S. and Engineers Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Stanford University, and a B.S. in Biology from Chatham University. She studied diverse microbial populations around the world, and has combined her knowledge of biology, environmental engineering, and microbiology to develop and design innovative “bioremediation” approaches to clean up contaminated sites, creating a green, cost-effective method to degrade diverse contaminants, such as chlorinated solvents, explosives, fuel compounds, and emerging contaminants.

Dr. LaPat-Polasko used qPCR to determine the source of a Naegleria fowleri impact in a drinking water source in the Phoenix, AZ area. During the her 27 years of experience as a technical consultant and chief science officer, she has had the opportunity to clean up contaminated sites, such as the Gulf oil and Exxon Valdez spills and contaminated sites around the world from Brazil to Australia to Europe using the power of mighty microbes to degrade these contaminants to nonharmful compounds. In addition to her bioremediation work, Dr. LaPat-Polasko has used DNA analyses to determine the source of a Naegleria fowleriimpact in a drinking water source in the Phoenix, AZ area.

The Environmental Engineering (EVE) Program includes prestigious representatives from organizations throughout the US, including Damann Anderson, Hazen and Sawyer; Maria Brady, Stantec; Zaid Chowdhury, Garver; Kirk Craig, Geosyntec Consultants; Daniel Gleiberman, Sloan Valve Co.; Charlie He, Carollo Engineers; Brandy Kelso, City of Phoenix; Mike Krebs, PACE; Craig McCurry, Intel Corporation; Elaine H.
