Matrix Names Prominent Remediation and
Environmental Specialist as Vice President

Dr. Laurie LaPat-Polasko has joined Matrix as Vice President.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – December 14, 2017 – What do Jacques Cousteau, shark bites, microbes that can biodegrade polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, and Matrix New World Engineering (Matrix) have in common? Answer: Dr. Laurie LaPat-Polasko. Matrix is pleased to announce that Dr. LaPat-Polasko has joined the firm as Vice President. Laurie will be developing and growing our remediation and environmental consulting practice in Phoenix and nationally.

A distinguished practitioner and renowned lecturer in the industry, Laurie has more than 25 years of experience as a technical consultant, project manager and chief science officer for efforts involving groundwater and soil remediation and wastewater treatment. She holds a BS in Biology from Chatham University, an MS in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Stanford University, an Engineers degree in Environmental Engineering from Stanford U., and a PhD in Microbiology from the University of MD.

LaPat-Polasko has managed and performed numerous remedial investigation/feasibility study efforts for complex problems associated with surface waters, groundwater and discharges from sewer systems. Laurie’s been actively involved in numerous Superfund sites and has developed, designed and implemented remediation plans for water and soil systems in addition to extensive experience interacting to USEPA and various state, county and city regulatory agencies in the U.S. and overseas. Throughout her career she has been actively engaged with the public through interactive meetings using innovative visual aids and prepared informational handouts for the public to explain the fundamentals of various remediation technologies and options.

Laurie worked for Jacques Cousteau at the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco evaluating water pollution in the Mediterranean Sea, an opportunity that initiated her passion for cleaning up our environment. She’s dealt with contaminants ranging from fluoride and arsenic to chlorinated solvents, explosives and fuel compounds. Among many other exploits, she lived alone on an island for a month off the coast of Florida conducting an independent research project. While diving in the coral reef tank at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, she was bitten by a shark.

Laurie said, “After isolating a bacterium (Pseudomonas LP, named after Laurie) that effectively biodegrades a harmful carcinogen, methylene chloride, in groundwater, I was hooked onto identifying and developing innovative ways to clean up our planet. I have used a wide variety of microbes from Australia to Brazil to Europe and all over the USA to biodegrade contaminants in surface water and groundwater and am thrilled to have the opportunity to further develop Matrix’s remediation portfolio.”
